History Of The Technique | The origins of this practice are unknown, but the villagers have been using it for as long as they can remember. |
Manufacturing technique | They used to employ this technique once every two years to ensure the preservation of fish in the river without overexploiting it. They relied on two types of plants, namely kharu and Lynot for this practice. Typically, these plants were employed separately, with an inclination to avoid simultaneous utilization. However, in cases where the desired quantity of a single plant could not be procured, the villagers would resort to a combination of both. |
Method of Preparation | Location: - Um khynri (Kulsi river) Time: - Usually practice during the warmer season especially on the month of April. Plant Collection Method: - In preparation for the event, the villagers would diligently assemble together one day in advance to engage in the collection of the specific plants required, carefully considering the suitability of "Kharu" and "Lynot." Once the roots and bark of these plants were gathered, they would fasten into bundles, each bundle approximate weight of one kilogram. When it came time to employ this traditional fishing technique, a single individual would shoulder to carry and utilizing six to seven bundle in total. Side effect: - There is no side effect and there is no change in the taste as well. Tools: - Knife, spade and beating stick. |
Material Composition | Type of Plants Used: 1. Kharu: It is a climber mainly found on forest area. After applying this plant to the water to stun and shock the fish, if incase the fish die during the application of this plants they will float to the surface. This plant is stronger compared to Lynot. Part used: - Roots 2. Lynot: it is a small tree usually found in forest and cultivated as well. After applying this plant to the water to stun and shock the fish, if incase the fish die during the application of this plants the fish will not float to the surface but instead sank to the bottom of the river and required an expert diver to retrieve it. How to implement | The prepared bundle is dipped into the water and then struck against a rock using a beating stick. It is repeatedly submerged in the river during this process. It takes around 1-2 hours for the plants to take effect. As a result, the fish become stunned and shocked, making them easier to collect. A skilled diver retrieves the immobilized fish during this opportune time. |
