History Of The Technique The field survey for documentation was carried out in conversation with the local knowledgeable fishers about different fishes found in different parts of Garo Hills and the different traditional methods used for fishing.
Manufacturing technique The feeds given to the fishes are; Banana Leaves, Yam leaves, Puff rice and Termites etc., they are being fed twice a day while some are fed thrice in a week. The ponds are dug till the water is arise up. Common Traditional tools use for fishing are (Chempa, Koksi, Checke.), D. Local fish E. Mucuna pruriens.
Method of Preparation The Traditional Method used for fishing include Chempa and checki where koksi is used for storing the fishes, Craps and Shrimps. The bark of Mucuna pruriens is used for poisoning the fish. It is the traditional method of catching fishes by mashing the bark inside a sack. The bark contains some toxins or chemical properties consequently stunting the fishes. After releasing the mashed bark of the mucuna pruriens (makkal), the fish would float to the surface for easy capture. The makkal or the bark of the makkal is also used as traditional method of fishing. The fishers mashed or beat the makkal with sticks for few minutes in order to let the juice poison the water. Subsequently, the stunned fish upon ingesting the poison would float to the surface for easy capture. Sometimes, streams or rivers would be partially blocked to slow down the water flow.
Material Composition As far as the information gathered through questionnaire it was reported that the different local fishes commonly found reared are Rohu, Catla, Silver Carp, Cat fish, Kalbos, Major carp, Common Carps. The temperature of the region in which the pond is situated is comparatively hot and humid in the summer and it is cold in the winter. The source of water for their pond is from a spring. The fishes produced are sold locally and in the nearby market at a price of approximately Rs. 200-350/kg and the annual income generated is 12k-15k in estimation. The rate can increase depending upon the market.
How to implement Gathering the fish is usually done manually by hand, however, baskets and nets are also occasionally utilized. The best season for fishing according to the fishers is said to be between the months of February-July.
