International Day Of The World’s Indigenous Peoples 2021

The 2021 commemoration of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples  focussed on the theme “Leaving no one behind: Indigenous peoples and the call for a new social contract” which was held on 9 August 2021.   
The 2021 commemoration of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples featured an interactive discussion with two speakers on  the distincted  elements to be considered when  building and  redesigning a new social contract that is inclusive of indigenous peoples – where indigenous peoples’ own forms of governance and ways of life must be respected and based on their free, prior and informed consent and genuine and inclusive participation and partnership. 
 

Launch Of State Of The World’s Indigenous Peoples, Volume V On “Rights To Lands, Territories And Resources”

The first publication of The State of the World’s Indigenous Peoples was published in 2009 and its major focus was on: Poverty and Well-being; Culture; Environment; Contemporary Education;Health; Human Rights and Emerging Issues. The report was well received and according to press reports, the publication revealed alarming statistics on indigenous peoples’ poverty, health, education, employment, human rights, the environment and more. This was the first United Nations publication and provided much needed information on the status of indigenous peoples throughout the world.The Report on the State of the World’s Indigenous Peoples promotes awareness of indigenous peoples’ issues within the United Nations system, with States, academia and the broader public.

ILO and Partners Celebrate International Day of World’s Indigenous Peoples 2019

One of the major findings from this project was indigenous languages. The indigenous communities identified that 92 percent of languages are vulnerable; 4 percent of languages are critically endangered, and the remaining 4 percent already extinct in Bangladesh. Only five indigenous communities get bilingual education at primary level and there are no indigenous teachers to teach in the schools. UN Resident Coordinator, Mia Seppo, emphasized the need to preserve indigenous languages and to enhance access to education for their own language.

Expert Group Meeting On Sustainable Development In Territories Of Indigenous Peoples

The International expert group meeting which was held on the Jan 23-Jan 25 2018 focussed on the theme “Sustainable Development in the Territories of Indigenous Peoples” 
(Article 4 of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples  that stated-
Indigenous peoples, in exercising their right to self-determination, have the right to autonomy or self-government in matters relating to their internal and local affairs, as well as ways and means for financing their autonomous functions).
                     
 
 

EGM On Indigenous Peoples And Agenda 2030 For Sustainable Development

On 22 and 23 October 2015, the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), Division for Social Policy and Development, Secretariat of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues organized a two-day expert group meeting (EGM) on indigenous peoples and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The meeting was aimed at developing strategic guidance and action-oriented recommendations to mobilize action and support to include indigenous issues in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

The meeting brought together indigenous experts, including representatives of the three UN mechanisms with specific mandates concerning indigenous peoples, academic experts and statisticians, and representatives of the UN system. The discussion was structured around three main areas: reflections on the goals and targets adopted in the 2030 Agenda; indicators for measuring progress for indigenous peoples; and monitoring development progress for indigenous peoples and experiences in data collection.

EGM On "Sexual Health And Reproductive Rights'

The International Expert Group Meeting on sexual health and reproductive rights: articles 21, 22 (1), 23 and 24 of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples was organized following a decision by the Economic and Social Council, authorizing a three day international expert group meeting.  The Expert Group Meeting is intended to:
• Analyze enshrined human rights within international standards and policies and how these could be more responsive to advancing the sexual health and reproductive rights of indigenous peoples;
• Promote an opportunity to exchange information, analysis and good practices;
• Identify options and further plans to build the necessary conditions for addressing the sexual health and reproductive rights of indigenous peoples, through concrete
recommendations to the UN system, Member States, indigenous peoples and their organizations as well as non-indigenous civil society organizations.
The final report and recommendations of the Expert Group Meeting will inform the thirteenth session of the Permanent Forum (12-23 May 2014), and also feed into the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples (September 2014) as well as the 20 year review of the International Conference on Population and Development and the ongoing
discussions to define a development agenda beyond 2015.
